  • Duration: 90 Minutes (approx.)
  • Location: Carterton, Wairarapa

Join us at the Star Safari Observatory for a unique 90-minute workshop where astronomy and art come together. In this hands-on session, you will learn how to sketch the Moon directly at the eyepiece of our telescopes while observing its craters, mountains, shadows, and changing light in real time.

You will be provided with a high-quality set of sketching pencils and sketch paper for the workshop, and you are welcome to bring your preferred drawing gear if you have it. Your hosts will guide you through the basics of lunar sketching, including how to identify key features, how to capture contrasts and textures, and how to translate what you see through the telescope onto your page.

Throughout the session, you will have dedicated telescope time to observe the Moon up close. We will adjust the telescopes for you and help you get the best possible view, making this workshop accessible for beginners as well as those with some astronomy experience. Our team will also offer tips on sketching technique, shading, and how to work efficiently while viewing an object that is constantly changing with the Moon’s motion.

The workshop is designed to be relaxed, engaging, and enjoyable. Whether you are new to astronomy, interested in art, or simply looking for a creative night under the stars, this experience offers a memorable way to connect with the night sky. The Star Safari Observatory offers a peaceful dark-sky setting amid the beauty of the Wairarapa, making it the perfect place to slow down, observe, and create.

All materials needed for the activity are supplied, and the session is suitable for adults and older children who enjoy drawing and stargazing. Bring warm clothing, your curiosity, and a sense of creativity as we guide you in capturing the Moon on paper.
