Once a year, the Earth reaches its closest approach to the Sun, and this will occur on 4 January 2026 at 6:15 am. Join us at Star Safari Observatory to watch the Sunrise and safely view the Sun through our solar telescopes, weather permitting. Bring along your breakfast, and we'll have some coffee, tea, and hot chocolate available.

You'll arrive before Sunrise. We'll talk about the Earth's orbit around the Sun and why Perihelion Day is so special in our orbit. It is the day when the Earth is travelling at its fastest.

For thousands of years, humans have gathered at different times of the year to watch sunrises and sunsets at equinoxes and solstices. Now we know a lot more about the Sun and Earth cycles and can appreciate what is actually happening. On Perihelion Day, the Earth is travelling at its highest velocity around the Sun and is at its closest point to the Sun. So join us to observe the Sun at this most amazing time of the year.

Duration: 5:30 AM-7 AM (please note this session is very early in the morning)
